Improve Your Search Results through Blog Commenting
Quality links from other websites in your niche is a great way to build online visibility (findability) for your own website. When you comment on another blog, you get a link back to your own website which helps more people find your content both through the referring link itself and by improving your search results.

The only real investment is time, because commenting on other people’s content is a completely free way to get yourself out there. When you make a quality, insightful comment on someone else’s content, you’re building a relationship with that writer by taking notice of and engaging in the conversation–something most bloggers appreciate very much. At the very same time, you’re creating a link back to your website. Getting two important business tasks accomplished at once–that’s efficiency!

Remember not to include a link to your website in the body of your comment, because that’s often considered spammy (or at least self-serving), and your comment is not likely to be approved. A tip to ensure your comment is approved, is simply to make sure you’re saying something relevant to the post that adds value to the conversation. Most blogs have a spot for you to add your name and website address–this is where your link will come from (in most, but not all cases).

Where to Comment

Look for blogs that are either in or compliment your own industry. Mix it up a bit by commenting on high profile and not-so high profile blogs. Some of the best blogs out there don’t necessarily receive a lot of comments, but their content is shared widely (this is due to the fact it’s easier to share content than take the time to make a comment). Let the quality of the content be your guide.

Subscribe to blogs you like and when they post something new, try to get over and read it so you can comment right away. This will allow your comment to be noticed and remembered by the writer, and make it more likely to be seen by others who read the post later. When you find blogs you like, comment on those blogs regularly, which further builds your relationship with the writer.

Relationship Building

If you want to really get the attention of and build a relationship with the writer, share the content on your social media channels like Twitter, Google+, and Facebook in addition to leaving a comment. The blogger is going to appreciate you, thank you, and remember you in most cases. He or she might even reciprocate by following your content and sharing it with their audience. Now you’ve created not just one link back to your site, but a series of links and a new friend–what’s better than that?

When to Comment

As a busy entrepreneur, you’re always racing with the clock, so a good rule of thumb it to build this practice into your schedule. Pick a couple times a week when you can devote 1/2 hour to making quality comments on the blogs you’re following, build those relationships, and raise your online findability all at the same time. Time well spent, yes? Yes!

Do you comment on blogs regularly? Share one of your favorites and why you love it in the comments–I would love to know!
