As the holidays rear their gorgeous, sparkly heads it’s very, very easy to succumb to holidays (and internet!) overwhelm.
Did I buy my clients the right gifts?
Am I using the right plugins?
Is anyone even on social media during the holidays?
Or are they on it all the time because they’re not at work?
Never fear! This year I’m giving you the holiday gift of a break from your blog without losing traffic or business. In three easy steps, no less! (and one bonus step if you’re feeling ambitious.)
1. Choose 4-5 of your best, most helpful archived posts + optimize them. And how does one go about optimizing blog posts?
- By making sure the images are Pinterest-friendly and that each image has a title tag
- By embedding links to related services, products, and other blog posts
- By linking (when it’s natural and not annoying) to your social media profiles and your list signup
- And by updating these older posts with new resources or epiphanies
2. Now create one big blog post highlighting these archived, newly optimized posts. Write a sweet post telling your readers that you’re taking a bit of time off for the holidays to enjoy your friends, family, and one metric ton of egg nog. Remind them that you’ll still be active on social media and that you’re accepting clients for the new year. Tell them that they can look through some of your best stuff over the course of December and then point them in the direction of your awesome-ized posts.
They’ll revisit some of your best things, be reminded of how clever and helpful you are, and you’ll get the break you need.
3. Schedule social media promoting your optimized posts + offerings. If you set aside an hour or so to schedule tweets and Facebook updates linking to these improved posts, you’ll still rack up new readers and traffic while you’re wrapping gifts. Hootsuite and Tweetdeck will help you get everything queued up.
*Bonus step If you’re feeling particularly ambitious or artistic, create images for each of your archived posts. This is a practice I see all the time with lifestyle bloggers (examples here and here) and it works like a charm!
That’s it! In about an hour, you can create a master blog post that keeps traffic and clients coming in while you’re lighting candles and sipping cider.
Are you taking time off from your blog this holiday season? If so, what are you doing?
