Lose weight! Learn a new language! Finally (finally) teach the dog to sit!
New Year’s resolutions. Most of us make ‘em, some of us actually keep them. And while I will never, ever dissuade you from eating more vegetables (start with this squash pizza), I’d be remiss if I didn’t remind you that your business and website might appreciate a bit of attention in the new year.
With that said, here are five resolutions your online life and website would like you to make:
1. “This year, I will keep my WordPress site updated.”
We’ve all be guilty of ignoring those ‘update ready’ notifications, but 2015 is the year that stops. This year, you’ll create weekly or monthly backups of your WordPress database, images, and all content. You’ll delete unused plugins, do regular security scans, and use a comment spam plugin like Akismet. Right? Right.
2. “This year, I’ll write strategically.”
You’ll write posts that tie into your services and offerings. You’ll write posts that relate to your newsletter opt in. You’ll syndicate older posts or repurpose them as guest posts or infographics or an email series. You’ll pitch guest posts to high traffic blogs and sites that are read by your ideal customers. No more fevered writing in an attempt to just get something up – just smart, helpful posts that people will read, forward around, and click through.
3. “This year, I’ll stop trying to be good at 17 social media platforms.”
It’s so, so much easier (and better!) to be good at two things than mediocre at six things. Think long and hard about which social media platforms are right for you and your business (this will help). Then commit to getting really good at those few platforms and allow yourself to delete the others. Not everyone needs to be on Instagram or Pinterest! You’ll feel better about your business and get better results when you narrow your focus.
4. “This year, I’m going to actually email my list.”
I know so many people who’ve been growing their list… and then don’t do anything with it (No shame! We’ve all been there!).
You don’t need to wait for a product launch or a momentous occasion to reach out to your list. In an absolutely perfect world, you’d be creating content that’s unique to your subscribers, but it is 100% okay if you just copy and paste your blog post into a newsletter template and send it off! Some contact is better than no contact.
5. “This year, I’m going to update my testimonials.”
Do you have piles of appreciative notes gathering dust deep in the recesses of your email folders? Dust them off, polish them up, add a headshot and put them up on your site! If you’re not sure how to go about gathering testimonials, this will help.
2015 is so excited to greet you and your business! I just know it’s going to be the best year for you yet!
