Simple SEO Strategies for Crazy Busy Entrepreneurs
If you’re online you’ve probably heard rumblings about SEO. You might have clicked through to read an article about SEO-ifying your site only to be overwhelmed with tech-talk and html gibberish.

Don’t worry! There will be nary a backslash or bracket in this blog post.

There are, of course, lots of widgets and codes and html-y things you can do to improve your website performance (and I can help you with those) but there are also plenty of things you can do without ever cracking open the dashboard of your site.

1. Give your blog posts obvious, specific titles.
If you’re writing a blog post about how to develop a character in a mystery novel, don’t title it “Curiouser and curiouser.” Give the post a title like “6 Ways To Develop The Characters In Your Mystery Novel.”

When you’re titling your posts, think about the words people use when they’re searching and the titles that you yourself click on. There’s a delicate balance between obvious and interesting, but it’s important to get it right. I love the Headline Analyzer.

2. Label your images appropriately.
Are you using images with your posts? You should be! Theymake your posts about a million times more engaging and pin-able. When we’re in a hurry to add images, it’s easy to pull something off the desktop that’s labeled “007sd.jpg.” Shockingly enough, that doesn’t do much for search engines. It only takes a second to save your image as “fiction-writing-tips.jpg” which will make it easy for search engines to find.

3. Link to things within your own site using keywords.
Because you’re clever, I know you’re already using your blog posts to promote your products and services. And you’re certainly linking to archived posts inside your newer posts. But are you using different terms each time you link to the same thing? If you continually use the same terms (like “WordPress maintenance”) you’ll improve your SEO and drive more traffic to those sales pages.

4. Link to other people.
When other people link to you, it increases your SEO. One of the best ways to get people to link to you? Link to them. Of course, the internet doesn’t work on a quid pro quo system and you shouldn’t link to people expecting them to return the favor. But promoting other people’s work is a great way to network, and it will exponentially increase the likelihood that other people will link to you.

5. Post regularly.
Yup, it’s that simple. The more content you have on your site, the higher your SEO. It makes sense, right? If I have one blog post about using auto-responders and you have 17 posts about using auto-responders it stands to reason that your SEO in regards to auto-responders will be higher than mine. If you’re running out of blog post ideas, this will help.

Are you intimidated by SEO? Have you tried any simple, non-html tweaks that have helped? Share your tips in the comments!
