We’ve been talking a lot about the unglamorous work that goes into creating a successful online space. It’s not always easy to see the connection between our hard work and the outcome. It’s not necessarily evident how blogging and social media work for our industry. It can feel like we’re just publishing and posting into the void and hoping for the best.
But when we consistently do the work, amazing things start to happen.
Case in point: Frostbeard Studio.
Two years ago, Frostbeard Studio consisted of Roxie and Tom Lubanovic. They sold cute, handmade mugs and candles through Etsy, doing all of their work in the kitchen at Roxie’s mom’s house. They lived in a one-bedroom apartment, worked long hours, and bootstrapped every single aspect of their business.
As overworked as they felt, they made time to tell the internet what they were doing.
They used Twitter and Instagram to share behind-the-scenes photos. They chatted with their Facebook fans. They shot cute product photos and launched a new scented candle each month. At the time, they had a tiny following and their updates didn’t get much engagement, but they kept plugging away.
And then Buzzfeed featured their ‘old books’ scented candle in a holiday gift guide and everything changed.
Frostbeard Studio was so inundated with orders, Roxie and Tom found themselves working 16-hour days and bringing on part-time help. Though the traffic died down a bit after the holidays, everything has changed for this small business. In the last 18 months, Frostbeard Studio has moved and upgraded their studio space twice. They’ve hired a full-time employee. Roxie and Tom just took a two-week vacation to Hawaii and bought their first house.
If you’re ever feeling overwhelmed by your online work or if it feels like no one’s listening, know that you could be one link away from a flood of business.
